So I went in for my 20 week anatomy ultrasound yesterday and Jon and Zoey came along for the fun too since it was scheduled at 8 am and we could all go before work and daycare. The tech started off with all the usual measurements. She asked if we were wanting to find out the sex of the baby and we said yes, that they had already told us that we were having a girl. The tech wanded over the legs and said that they were too tightly curled and too close together to look so she would continue to get the other measurements and come back to it when the baby moved. She took some more measurements and then the baby moved a bit and she went back down to the legs and measured the femur.
Then she looked up at me and said, “They told you that you were having a girl?” to which I responded hesitantly,
“Yes…”
“Cuz I’m pretty sure that this is a boy.”
“What?”
“Yup, there it is, I’m about 100% sure that this is a baby boy!”
I looked up at the screen, looked at her, looked at the screen, looked at Jon, looked up at the screen and I think I may have just let out a small “huh.” Jon looked like he was laughing at the change of events and I was just in shock. For the last 20 weeks I had been thinking that I was carrying my baby girl when in fact, I had been carrying my baby boy. The tech asked if I was happy about it and I said that I of course was happy, just shocked. I would be happy having either but had grown accustomed to the idea of another little girl. We had picked out the name and everything!
Zoey had been calling my tummy Ivy or Little Sister for quite a while now and she didn’t really understand the news that she wasn’t getting a baby sister anymore. We told her that she was having a baby brother instead and she laughed at us and said, “No, little sister!” lol She still is slipping back and forth between the two today but is getting more used to the idea. We asked her what we should name Little Brother and she triumphantly responded with, “Ice Cream!” The name debate has already restarted in my household so we will see where we end up.
Although I am relatively certain that the ultrasound was accurate, and that we are in fact having a boy, I am also going to get another one done next week just as a double check. You never know if they were reading the scan wrong and it was actually the cord. haha So if they decide to tell me next Wednesday that they think it’s a girl and not a boy, I’ll likely just throw my hands up in the air and wait to find out at delivery – if I can really wait that long.
